Articles like this one make a fine point, as far as it goes. First, though, it overlooks the most obvious point: there are only two candidates to choose from. The next president will either be Trump or Biden. Conspicuousness absent from the ballot are George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and St. Paul (probably because of his checkered past).
Of the two on the ballot, there seems to be no scruples amongst the Christians too good to vote for anyone of poor character to judge Trump but somehow won’t judge Biden, lest they be judged. I’m sure it couldn’t be because judging Biden has worldly costs where judging Trump helps circulation and booking gigs on CNN.
Second, it overlooks how a candidate’s policies reflect a candidate’s character. Beyond the obvious case of corruption where a candidate takes a stand solely in return for campaign contributions, a candidate’s policy positions can be the result of fear, ambition, avarice, or any of the other vices. What does it say about a candidate, a prominent Catholic no less, who advocates for the murdering of a million babies every year because the babies are inconvenient. Further, this candidate not only calls for their murders, but advocates that the government subsidize the killings to encourage more killings and make us complicit. How do Christians who thank God daily that they don’t put politics before their Christianity like those populist, opportunistic, racist barbarians overlook the stated determination to dismember a million babies every year.
But, but they say, “what about policies toward the poor, the refugees, and LBGTQ community (well maybe not the last one except that we should welcome them into our churches and not make them uncomfortable about their lifestyles.)”. Well, if you think government handouts have been good for either the physical or the spiritual well-being of the poor, I have a candidate for you with the soundest of characters. A good Catholic (even if he rejects virtually every tenet of Catholicism) who always looks out for the poor (We know he loves because his policies always insure we have more them.) from the great state of Delaware (known for its corruption) with great relationships with China, Russia, and the Ukraine (why else would they give him Hunter millions of dollars).
